US Cyber Security Report Due May 29th

Washington, DC - Tuesday, May 26, 2009 - 3:00 pm ET -The Whitehouse made the following statement today at the daily Press Office Press Briefing by Whitehouse Press Secretary Robert Gibbs: 60-Day Cyber Space Policy Review Report To be released May 29th, 2009

The President will release the 60-Day Cyber Space policy review report at the Whitehouse on Friday, May 29, 2009. The administration recognizes the very serious threats Public & Private sector Networks face from cyber-crime and cyber-attack.

Recognizing these threats the President has elevated cybersecurity to a major administration priority by undertaking an early comprehensive interagency review.

The administration is also committed to establishing the proper structure within the government to insure that cybersecurity issues continue to receive top-level attention and enhanced coordination. The report is an important first step toward securing the nation’s cyber-infrastructure.

In the early edition of Washington Post, staff writer by Ellen Nakashima in her article entitled “Obama Set to Create a Cybersecurity Czar with Broad Mandate - Shielding Public, Private Networks Is Goal” reported President Obama is expected to announce late this week that he will create a “cyber czar,” a senior White House official who will have broad authority to develop strategy to protect the nation’s government-run and private computer networks, according to people who have been briefed on the plan.

The adviser will have the most comprehensive mandate granted to such an official to date and will probably be a member of the National Security Council but will report to the national security adviser as well as the senior White House economic adviser, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deliberations are not final.

The announcement will coincide with the long-anticipated release of a 40-page report that evaluates the government’s cybersecurity initiatives and policies. The report is intended to outline a “strategic vision” and the range of issues the new adviser must handle.

Green IT - Business Technology

A common myth is that technology has not yet advanced enough to create a paperless office.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The main obstacle is not technology, but people.

Replacing paper with electronic forms is easy, reduces business costs and wasted time.
Not only is a paperless organisation more eco-friendly, but it also benefits in increased organisational efficiency, increased business visibility and enables you to abide to compliance, legal and regulatory requirements.

Business Benefits

  • Cost - cost of paper, cost of office storage space, cost of staff dealing with paper
  • Staff - reduces the number of employees dealing with paperwork and manual tasks
  • Visibility - audit trails - electronic forms enable you to have visibility over your processes. everything is stored in the database.
  • Compliance, legal and regulatory requirements - government regulations, legal requirements, lost documents, data security
  • Efficiency - Improves organisational efficiency, minimizes risks, enforces organisational policies.

Paperless Technology

Paperless technology is available today and is proven to be successful.

  • Convert your paper forms to web-based, online forms, electronic forms.
  • Convert your manual paper-based processes into automated electronic processes
  • Convert your manual approvals into automated approval cycles

How does the paperless software work?

Lets take a common expense approval process for example:

  • The user opens a link to an internal web page and fills in the expense request online.
    - the data is saved in the database, so the user won't need to re-submit the information in other forms.
    - the system recognises who is logged in, so the user won't need to write in their details - saves time and hassle
    - the information is validated before submitting - reduces errors
  • The system sends a task to the first approver.
    - the approver gets an email with the request information already embedded in the email.
    - the email has a link that enables to approve/decline and add comments.
    - all the information and comments are saved in the database - enables to create reports like: show me the reasons for unapproved requests
  • If the expense is over the company expense limit - send it to the finance department for approval
    - automated business rules - lets you set company policies
    - decisions are enforced by the software, not by humans
  • Approved - create purchase order.
    - submitting forms online eliminates the need to mail purchase orders and create paper documentation.
  • SLAs and escalations
    - if one of the approvers has not completed their task in time, the system will send a reminder, send a warning, forward the task to another approver in the group or escalate the problem to the manager - making sure that nothing falls in the cracks.
    - humans make mistakes - software picks up on the mistakes.
  • Monitoring and reports
    - the paperless software will show visual gauges and data reports of the budget used, budget left and any irregularities.
    - trend analysis - based on current spending, when will we go over-budget?
    - alerts and notifications during the approval process to all participants
  • Audit trails
    - timestamps – who approved, when did they approve?
    - how many requests were sent to the finance department?
    - transparency and process visibility

Replacing traditional paper-based processes with paperless software enables you to increase your business efficiency, productivity, and operational visibility.
Paperless software automates manual tasks, automates decisions and streamlines work processes

Paperless software enables you the flexibility of reducing printed paper, but still enabling users to print copies, if needed.
All the paper that your business uses has both a financial and environmental cost associated with it.

The impact on the environment - Statistics

The use of paper in businesses causes forest degradation, and increases the use of chemicals, water and energy to manufacture the paper.
Recycling does not solve the problem. The only way forward is to completely eliminate the use of paper in the office.

UK

  • UK uses 12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard every year
  • On average, each person in the UK uses over 200 kg of paper per year.
  • 80.6m tonnes of writing and printing paper enters the waste stream each year
  • To grow enough trees to provide the amount of paper that Britain uses each year, you would need a forest the size of Wales
  • Every tonne of biodegradable waste produces 300-500 cubic metres of landfill gas

USA

  • U.S. businesses use around 21 million tons of paper every year
  • On average, each person in the U.S. uses 650 pounds of paper a year
  • Every year, nearly 900,000,000 trees are cut down to provide raw materials for American paper and pulp mills
  • On average, every American, in one lifetime, uses: 18 ton of paper, 23 ton of wood, 16 ton of metal, and 32 ton of organic chemicals.
  • America is home to 5% of the world's population, yet it consumes a third of the Earth's paper and timber, making paper the largest part of the waste stream at 37.5% of the total waste stream

  • It takes 24 trees to make 1 tonne of paper
  • Every tonne of paper recycled saves 17 trees
  • One tonne of paper from recycled pulp saves 17 trees, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 7,000 gallons of water, 390 gallons of oil, 4,200 kilowatt hours and prevents 60 pounds of air pollutants

Paperless software can help you support the environment while generating significant time and cost savings for your business

Reduce costs, Reduce wasted time, Reduce your environmental footprint

Users can automatically encrypt Gmail connection

Gmail now can be set to encrypt communications between a browser and Google's servers by default, an option that makes the e-mail service harder to snoop on but also potentially slower.

Users already could encrypt communications with Gmail servers (by going to https://mail.google.com), but on Thursday, the company added an option to use that encrypted connection automatically.

"Your computer has to do extra work to decrypt all that data, and encrypted data doesn't travel across the Internet as efficiently as unencrypted data," Gmail engineer Ariel Rideout said in a blog post Thursday. "That's why we leave the choice up to you."

The encryption comes through use of HTTPS, a secure version of the HTTP protocol that governs how Web browsers fetch information from servers. It's not simple to snoop on somebody else's network traffic, but it can be done when the communications aren't encrypted.

HTTPS encrypts communications only between the browser and Gmail's servers. It's not like PGP (nee Pretty Good Privacy) or GPG (GNU Privacy Guard) software that encrypts e-mail all the way from source to destination.

The Gmail login process is always encrypted.

Now 400 GB LAPTOP hard disks from Toshiba

Toshiba just bested its own 320GB hard drive with a 400GB offering in the same 9.5-mm height form factor favored by most thin laptops.

That's as good as it gets unless you can track down Sammy's elusive 500GB Spinpoint M6. The MK4058GSX spins just 2 platters which means the disk sports an impressive 477Mbit/mm2 (308Gbpsi) areal density while consuming 20% less power (0.0015W/GB energy consumption efficiency) and 2dB less noise than its own 320GB predecessor. Rounding out the specs are a 12-ms average seek and 8MB cache. Toshiba also boosted the rest of its 9.5-mm, 2.5-inch, 3.0Gbps SATA disk lineup to 7,200rpm including the 320GB MK3254GSY. Mass production of the 400GB slab is expected to begin in September while the 7,200 HDDs will hit the market in August. No prices announced yet.

Now get an ATM machine right in your living room

At first look, the ATM Bank looks like a toy. You know, the sort of thing best summed up with a remark about training our kids to regard banking as a consumption facilitation service. As it happens, it's pitched as a serious at-home alternative to the real thing!

Wouldn't it be ideal to have a cash machine in your front room? There's nothing worse than having to walk half a mile down the road in grotty weather to pick up your very own money. This nifty mini ATM Machine is the piggy bank of the new millennium. Every time you make a deposit the ATM keeps a running total giving you an account balance you can keep tabs on on a regular basis. Withdrawing money couldn't be easier, just pop the card in the slot, enter your PIN and select the amount you need. The high street in the comfort of your own home and without the 'Sorry- Out of Order' disappointments.

It costs £25 and you don't get a free toaster for opening an account. What's the overdraft policy?

A coin-sized ball with a powerful SPY video camera built-in

This is a fairly neat looking and rather discrete video recorder. The CamBall is a miniature digital video recorder that can record MPEG-4 video in 320×240 or 640×480 resolution. It can store up to 8GB of data on a tiny SD card(and it looks like the card is sold separately).

And like many great gadgets, this one is currently only available in Korea, for around $200 US. And while my Korean language skills are limited to 0 words, my looking at a photo ability has discovered that this spy ball also has an underwater case(might be sold separately) for taking videos while you’re snorkeling or scuba diving.

There is also an alternate version that comes with an mp3 player built in.

iPod, iPhone gadget accessory that can sync, store and charge

Normally my eyes tend to glaze over when it comes to the hundreds of accessories available for the iPod or the iPhone, but this relatively compact USB dongle from Macally seems to be pretty useful. On one end you’ll find a standard USB connection but on the other there’s the 30 pin connector used by the iPhone and the various iPod’s for charging and syncing. I guess the primary use of the PowerLink is as an emergency backup battery to extend the life of your device if you happen to be away from a power source.

Unfortunately there’s no details on the Macally site as to how much longer you can expect a device to run with the PowerLink attached, but given its size I don’t think we’re talking hours and hours.

The PowerLink can also be used as a substitute sync cable between your PC and iPod/iPhone if you’ve forgotten or chose not to carry the standard cable. Given the fact that it’s not flexible like the cable though, it might be a bit awkward to use if you don’t have a table or flat surface to put the devices on. But as an added bonus Macally has also crammed 2GB of flash memory in there so it’s even useful as just a USB flash drive. While it’s still listed as ‘Coming Soon’ on the Macally website, when it is available the PowerLink will sell for $49.99.

Surf the net while surfing waves

Surfer test runs the hi-tech board
Sun, sea, sand - spam?
For a decade, "surfing" has come to mean browsing the net rather than riding ocean waves on a plank.

But a surfboard has now been developed that lets surfers surf while surfing. The prototype board has been built by Devon "shaper" Jools Matthews.

It houses a laptop, solar panels, and video camera, and is to launch at the Intel GoldCoast Oceanfest on 18 June.

The world's first wi-fi board uses a high-speed net connection point - hotspot - positioned on the beach.

Chip makers Intel has commissioned the unusual surfboard as part of the free sports and music festival in North Devon to show off how technology can be brought to the sea and sand.

The board will have its maiden outing on the waves when it is used by international pro surfer Duncan Scott at the event.

Ride with the best

"As a professional surfer, explorer, writer, film producer and world traveller, being able to communicate quickly and effectively is critical to my success," said Mr Scott, who also advised on the board's design.

Surfer test runs the hi-tech board
The board is a prototype to show off technology
"In the near future," he added, "via wireless real-time streaming, it could be possible that observers will, for the first time, actually be able to 'ride' a wave with the best surfers in the world."

The board itself is 9ft 4 inch long board, ideally suited to the particular waves found along the UK's "Surfers' Paradise" in North Devon.

The technology, supplied by Intel, is tucked away neatly in the board, inside a specially designed waterproof casing.

The casing is made of a tough but lightweight tray, and has a silicone seal, a crystal PVC cover and an aluminium gasket.

The tablet laptop has a wireless chip, a 1.7Ghz processor and a 80Gb hard drive.

Power comes from the solar panels fitted onto the board, and it also has a video camera which can store 64Mb worth of wave-catching action.

Serious side

But even though it is all a bit of fun, serious efforts have been made to ensure the technology did not interfere with the ride and feel of the board, said Intel.

The laptop weighs in at 2.3kg and its position in the board was careful calculated to maintain the desired balance for surfers.

"It's all about giving people the freedom to get online when and where they want - and this technology demonstrates that with a bit of imagination you can do just that," said Tim Hatch, Intel's consumer marketing manager.

The GoldCoast Oceanfest takes place from 18 to 20 June at Croyde beach in North Devon.

How can i use internet information services for asp.net with vb?

you cannot programmatically configure the remoting system for your remotable type directly in the host process, because the host application domains are created by IIS and ASP.NET. However, you can use the Global.asax file to do much of the same programmatic configuration that you can do in other types of application domains.
